Description

kiyâm is a collection of poems infused with nêhiyawêwin, the Cree language. The collection opens with a guide to Cree pronunciation to assist readers. The poems are divided into three general groups: family, reclamation, and history. The poems navigate between Cree and English, mimicking the author’s own mixed heritage. Though steeped in Cree culture, many of the themes, such as family relationships and identity, will connect with readers widely—in fact, the poems could be used to inspire writings based on a reader’s own experiences and identity.
