Description

Cartographic Poetry is a multidisciplinary examination of five maps drawn in 1801 and 1802 by Blackfoot and Gros Ventre Peoples for the Hudson’s Bay Company. These are some of the earliest documents created by Indigenous people of the prairies and foothills of North America, and they preserve invaluable evidence about places on the landscape and historical Blackfoot conceptions of their territories. The book approaches the maps from historical, linguistic, and archaeological perspectives, considering their place names and features. Educators can use this book, or excerpts from it, to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into social studies lessons. The book can also serve to develop critical thinking in students as they analyze the maps and what they represent, contributing to better comprehension of Alberta’s Indigenous history and geography. While much of the text has a more academic tone that would engage higher-level readers, this work also features a collection of images that could connect with more visually focused learners.
