- Description
Using the example of five Blackfoot shirts housed at the University of Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum, Peers and Brown explore concepts around reconciliation and Blackfoot culture, past and present. While this volume focuses on navigating cultural protocol and rights within museum spaces, it could inspire classroom discussions about respecting Indigenous ways of knowing in other settings and circumstances. The initial chapters provide a brief overview of Blackfoot history and settler colonization that is suitable for social studies lessons, but the most compelling elements are the full-colour pictures showing the quillwork and details of the shirts themselves. The book includes other examples of historical and modern artwork, including pieces made by high school students, which could be used to explore the skill of Indigenous artists.
