Abode

Jun-long Lee’s collection of interconnected poems in Abode explores the concept of belonging and place. Each poem is rich with descriptive language, helping the reader to paint a mental picture and guiding them through the poetic landscape like a meditation. The work offers plenty of space for interpretation and could be used in English language arts lessons to explore how interpretation can vary, or how word selection can be used to imbue a scene with a particular tone. Given the themes and layered textual symbolism, this work could be used for independent analysis for more advanced learners, though some of the lush vocabulary used may require educator support for younger readers. The length of the poems make them easy to explore collaboratively as a class, either to offer vocabulary support for earlier learners or to encourage learners to compare their interpretations.
