- Description
Îethka is a celebration of Stoney Nakoda First Nation language, culture, and history through stories, teachings, and reflections by Stoney authors, as well as language-learning aids such as the Stoney alphabet and pronunciation guides. The topics range from traditional knowledge, education about plants and animals, and counting and other vocabulary. This book also contains multimedia elements, such as audio clips, to support language learning. The main goal is to preserve and enhance the language and culture. The colourful photos and images make this book an option for a multilingual storytime. Many of the elements even have pre-made quizzes. The multimedia materials are also inclusive of multiple learning styles and would make it feasible to use some parts of this book even without a fluent Îethka speaker. Educators can use this book to facilitate discussion with earlier learners regarding reconciliation and cultural identity, but they can also use it with older learners to build fluency or discuss the importance of preserving Indigenous languages.
