- Description
The Last Band on Earth follows The Dead Layaways, made up of Nat and her bandmates, who live in a dystopian world where demonic entities control opportunity and success. The narrative primarily follows the band as they struggle with their mental health and try to balance artistic ambition with survival. This work alternates between intimate character moments and surreal, horror-tinged scenes to explore concepts of belonging, adulthood, and interpersonal relationships. Given the focus on adulthood along with career and life planning, this graphic novel would appeal to more advanced learners. This work could be paired with lessons designed to help learners reflect on their own fears and concerns, as well as explore next steps in their lives. It can also help learners to explore ways that graphic novel formats can convey complex ideas, such as mental health.
