Troubled Tributaries explores the grassroots movement of fisheries conservation in the Rocky Mountains from 1900 to 1930. George Colpitts explores the ways that traditional Indigenous rights, outdated territorial fishery laws, and industrialization led to anglers of the rivers setting aside some of their personal differences to push for better regulations. It is a deep dive into a specialized part of Alberta’s history and the role anglers have played in tourism, regulation, and environmental protection. Despite the topic being more academic, the vocabulary is accessible for advanced learners. While the entire text may be of interest to select learners, excerpts could be used as examples of an informative writing style to show citations using footnotes or as a reading supplement to environmental lessons.
