West to Grande Portage: The Canada West Historical Series, Book 2

Travel back to the fur trade era in West to Grande Portage, a historical fiction novel following Phillippe Chabot, who joins a crew of Voyageurs to make the journey from Montreal to Grande Portage. Though only 16, Phillippe joins the company and becomes the lens through which the reader experiences the harsh and sometimes violent life of early traders. This work does include some Western historical perspectives of Indigenous Peoples (primarily referred to as Indians based on the historical context). This book can be used as a class-wide or individual novel study for English language arts lessons exploring character and plot development. It could also be used with more advanced learners in connection with the social studies curriculum. By using archival documents, readers can not only explore the relationships of the fur trade and the impacts on communities but also discover additional sources to round out the Indigenous perspective of the story.
