- Description
While much of recorded history focuses on the stories of a few well-known figures, Amma’s Daughters looks at the stories of women involved in the independence movement of India, centring on the life of the author’s mother. Shrivastava uses her relatives’ journals, autobiographies, and archival material to draft an account that is rooted in familial experience, with some creative liberties taken to clarify the storyline. With key themes ranging from the impacts of colonialism to classism to intergenerational relationships, this book could be used in social studies classes to discuss how recorded history may present a bias or exclude certain voices. This work is also an excellent example of using archival material to create a retelling of events rooted in facts, which could inspire English language arts or social studies lessons.
