Mountain Voices is a visually rich exploration of how the mountain landscapes of Alberta and British Columbia have transformed over the past 100+ years. The book is built around the Mountain Legacy Project (MLP), which re-photographs historic mountain survey images taken by early Dominion Land Surveyors and compares them with contemporary photographs from the same vantage points. Through these paired images, the book highlights changes in glaciers, forests, fire regimes, wildlife habitat, land use, and human development across the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Mountains. It blends environmental history, Indigenous perspectives, geography, and climate science with accessible short texts from a variety of experts supported by numerous photos and maps. The format of the text is broken into various stand-alone personal essays that would make using excerpts of the text or the images easy. Excerpts could be used with social studies or science lessons as early as Grade 4 to show a range of perspectives on the mountain landscape.
