Nighthawks is a collection of lyrical poems broadly about humanity and our relationships with each other, the land, the past, and the future. The topics range from short, almost horoscopic poems for each of the Myers–Briggs personality types to longer reflections of landscape imagery. Martin alternates between observational distance and confessional proximity, allowing the reader to inhabit both the observer’s analytical stance and the participant’s embodied yearning. Throughout the whole work, several recurring themes emerge, including interdependence, legacy, and destructive relationships. Individual poems can be assigned for independent analysis or to open discussions about emotions. The poems could be used for analysis or, given the range of writing styles, learners could also try different styles of poetic writing to develop their own skills or express their feelings.
