Description

Roth by Richard Van Camp is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that tells a tense survival story of four Indigenous men trying to survive after being abandoned in the forest. They stumble upon a strange smoldering cabin, seemingly abandoned, and proceed to explore it to find resources that could help them in their goals of finding family or getting revenge. They find more than they bargained for—a wheetago in a pit behind the house. This novel explores themes of community under duress, fantasy horror, and ethical choices coloured by fear and the desire for safety. The writing is clear and engaging, and it intersperses the survival narrative with references to Dene and Cree culture, which can fulfill the requirement for grades 7–9 to experience texts from different cultures. This book can also be used to engage readers in grades 7–12 who find it difficult to focus on longer-form prose.
