Description

In seven and a half short stories, Rubble Children explores Zionism and Jewish identity within a fictionalized Toronto-area Reform community and shul called Kol B’Seder. Kreuter’s characters—children, teenagers, and adults—are forced to confront their Jewish beliefs and identities when they encounter anti-Zionism in synagogue, at family dinners, in adversarial board meetings, and among childhood friends. Many of the pieces involve sensitive topics, such as death and grieving, the Nakba, the Holocaust, sexuality, and drug use, but these are generally handled with care. The interlinked short stories could easily be used in English language arts and social studies classes to discuss topics related to history, identity, ideology, settler colonialism, and more.
