Description

A White Lie is a powerful memoir that chronicles the life of a Palestinian woman growing up in Gaza. Albatta begins by narrating a small lie she told when she was a schoolgirl and how that grew into her becoming the youngest school principal in Gaza. The book, in many ways, celebrates her remarkable achievement—from the very first schools for refugee children in Gaza after the 1948 Nakba—to yield a unique insight into the social, material, and political realities of Palestinian life and to preserve the history and culture for her people. This work can build students’ knowledge and inquiry of world history, human rights, and cultural diversity. Using a social studies and language arts approach, educators can encourage students to reflect on themes of resilience, education, and the consequences of historical events upon individual lives. Possible activities include a discussion about the role of education, primary source analysis, and then a comparison of historical perspectives.
