Watishka Warriors

In Watishka Warriors, Sandy Lafond returns to the Watishka First Nation in Northern Alberta to care for her aunt and finds the community struggling to deal with local gangs and a recent suicide. Sandy soon brings together a junior hockey team to give community members a goal to focus on, despite the path to teamwork not being entirely smooth. This book features high-interest topics for learners who enjoy sports, and is written at an accessible level. Throughout the text, importance is placed on personal well-being, both mental and physical, and the role community plays in wellness. The book could be used to help learners explore connections between fictional texts and historical events, and to highlight the importance of leadership, cooperation, and teamwork.
